Health matters

It can be very easy to assume that any distress and discomfort that the person you care for is experiencing is to do with dementia. When in fact it could be a physical problem causing it.

There could be many factors and causes for pain and discomfort including;

  • arthritis
  • toothache
  • constipation

If you have any concerns about the wellbeing of the person you care for then you should discuss them with their GP. This is so that physical causes or reactions to current medication can be ruled out. It could be something as simple as their glasses are dirty or their hearing aid isn't working properly.

Living a healthy life and having dementia can be achieved quite easily. The trick is to stay on top of any discomfort and distress that your loved one is feeling.

Asking them about what they are feeling and why they are feeling it may result in an answer that doesn't quite make sense.  But explore the matter further and you may find the cause of the problem.

Every doctor and optician around the country has a way of dealing with people suffering with dementia.  This allows them to provide the help and support that they need. They can very easily adapt their techniques to suit people with dementia.  So do make them aware of the fact that the person has dementia before their appointment.
