Talking to family and friends

If you have been diagnosed with dementia then you may be wondering how to bring the subject up with your family and friends.

You may not know how they are going to react. Perhaps you are concerned that they will be overly protective, judgemental or will change towards you.

There can be a big stigma in communities in regards to dementia and this is the reason that some people can act strangely when given the news.

Most people find that if they can be honest with their friends and family then they can get the help that they need. Being honest with your family and friends is a great step and will allow you to breath a sigh of relief.

Most family members and friends will be more than happy to help you if you ask them to. Even if it is just a few little things here and there that can help you out. They will be happy to look after you or find you some support.

Many people are afraid of telling their family as they may think that they will be shipped off to a care home right away. This is not the case.  Most family members will want to help you stay in your home and live independently for as long as possible. This  is  the best environment for people with dementia.

After a diagnosis, your life won't change that much so it is important to let your family and friends know this. You can still be social and have fun and be involved with family events. Talking to family and friends can provide you with a lot of help and support.
