Your changing relationship

In the early stages of dementia, people's abilities are often likely to stay the unchanged. It is best to keep things as normal as possible throughout this period.

Allow people to live independently and carry on doing things that you both enjoy. It is best to do things with the person rather than for them, so that they can stay involved in daily household life.

It is important not to patronise them or try to do too much for them. They may be able to complete a task, it just may take them more time.

Becoming a carer for someone may change your relationship with that person. This is especially true when caring for someone with dementia. It is important to know this but to let it happen naturally. Do not force them into a life where you do everything for them. This is can make them feel useless and make you feel exhausted.

Dealing with dementia

If you are caring for a partner then you may feel more like their parent than a spouse. This can happen but it is important that you adapt and remain loving and close. This may not be easy to do in this situation but do remember that they are your partner and not someone you simply look after.

As your relationship changes it can become increasing tough to care for your loved one. As a dementia sufferer deteriorates this can prove to be hard to manage. It is important that you remember the person behind the disease and not just the disease itself.
